Look Before you Leap
By Jim Murdoch
My first job was as a draughtsman. This was in the mid-1970s. Back then there was no such thing as AutoCAD, in fact no home computers. Everything was done by hand, which was fine because I came top of my year in Engineering Drawing and all I'd wanted to be since I was 12 and discovered technical drawing was to be a draughtsman. I look exercises home and did them for fun. I started work in an architect's office two days after I left school. This would make me 16 at the time. My salary for my first month was a mere £30 which was basically to cover my train fair; there was next to nothing left afterwards. The thing was the job I was asked to do required me to work with technical pens, something I'd never even attempted before. I'd only ever worked with a pencil. The problem was that they were asking me to a) work at a faster speed than I was used to and b) with a considerably greater accuracy than had been required of me at school. After 3 months I resigned because I could see I was going to be sacked. The moral of the story is to do your research before you decide what you're going to commit years of your life to, basically look before you leap. The irony is that I ended up working with computers in later life but I never got round to teaching myself AutoCAD, not even for fun.
